The challenge
Technical detail

Syngenta is a leading agricultural science and technology provider. As a first step in their digital transformation journey, Syngenta wanted to digitalise part of their production plant in Seneffe, Belgium. The plant specialises in manufacturing formulation insecticides (FO-INS), one of their most complex production processes. These processes were powered by a distributed control system (DCS) and a data historian, provided by Yokogawa Electric.

The results

Using our extensive Yokogawa knowledge and experience, we took care of the planning, execution, and support of Syngenta’s first digital transformation project. We digitalised the Tier 1 production follow-up of formulation insecticides, replacing the old paper-based process with a fully digitalised platform based on the Microsoft Power Platform. We achieved significant improvements in transparency and Operating Equipment Efficiency (OEE).

We partnered with

We always provide our clients with comprehensive support throughout their entire digital transformation journey. Our approach for Syngenta's pilot project was no different, and we were there every step of the way, from strategy to planning, execution, and support.

Strategy

During the strategy phase, we usually provide advisory services to help our clients determine the direction of their digital transformation journey. In this case, Syngenta had already thought out a DX strategy where everything was interconnected, using the FO-INS production process as an ambitious start. Together with Syngenta’s Operational Excellence (OpEx) team and Yokogawa, we fine-tuned their roadmap and came up with a feasible project approach.

Planning

During the planning phase, we aligned on a customised approach, allowing for quick adaptation to the project’s requirements and features. We worked closely with Syngenta and Yokogawa to ensure that the project was tailored to their specific needs and goals. For example, we omitted and rescheduled certain meetings with operators based on Syngenta’s ongoing production process, which obviously took priority.

“We are thrilled with the way Coretecs handled this project together with our technical partner Yokogawa. They take every little comment into account and communicate proactively, which is a tremendous help in the ongoing UAT sessions. Coretecs has proven itself a capable partner with a holistic view by considering our entire digital transformation journey. We’re excited to see how they will continue to help us and Yokogawa as this project and the rest of our journey progresses.”
– Quentin Delvigne, Transformation & OpEx Engineer at Syngenta

Execution

During the execution phase, we set up a fully connected and digitalised platform that monitors the production of FO-INS. We set up a secure gateway that leverages Yokogawa’s on-premises data and infrastructure, including their ExaQuantum data historian, to visualise a new digital user experience.

To build this platform, we needed something that neither Yokogawa nor Syngenta had worked with already: low-code technologies. We opted to use the Microsoft Power Platform because of its integration possibilities with Syngenta's current tools and its extensive support. We worked tirelessly to ensure that the platform was user-friendly and intuitive, making it easy for Syngenta’s operators to use and benefit from.

Support

Of course, no project would be complete without solid support. Thanks to our managed services, Syngenta could rest assured that their brand-new system will stay up and running after delivery. As we continue supporting Syngenta in their digital transformation projects, the valuable feedback gathered from User Acceptance Testing (UAT) meetings will determine the direction we’ll head in.

Conclusion

As we look to the future, we are thrilled to continue our partnership with Yokogawa and Syngenta in this project and beyond. We believe that the Operational Excellence team at Syngenta has an excellent vision of how to make Seneffe stand out as a smart factory that can serve as a shining example for their other facilities around the world.

We are also grateful for Yokogawa’s invitation to collaborate, and we are convinced that their co-innovation mindset will facilitate the upcoming teamwork between our companies. The future is bright, and we are excited to see which great results we will achieve together!

“Coretecs proved themselves experts at translating Syngenta’s ideas into a working solution, both on a business and technical level. They helped with choosing system architectures, developing the application and its interactions with our pre-existing systems, discussing business improvements, and introducing an Agile way of working with achievable sprints. In a relatively short time, they helped to realise tangible benefits for Syngenta.”
– Michel Lamine, Account Manager at Yokogawa
